Drop Shotting:

(By Matt Keith)

Tie a 1/0 straight hook with a Palomar knot tied directly to the line with the hook tip facing upward. Leaving about 18 to 24 inches on the tag (bottom) end. On the tag end, connect a 1/8- to ½-ounce drop shot sinker or barrel style sinker. The swivel style will prevent line twists. The lighter sinkers are normally the best choice. If fishing deep or in current a larger sinker can be use. A fluorocarbon line will help detect the subtle bites that come with drop shotting. Light line is the standard with this setup but some anglers are starting to use heavier line and larger baits.

The standard setup would be 6 to 8 pound line and a 3 to 4.5 inch soft body worm. Since you don’t normally cast this setup a 6 foot to 7 foot spinning rod is standard. If there isn’t a lot of structre to snag your hook, nose hook it with the hook exposed. If there is a lot of cover than fish it weed less. Fish this setup vertically and keep the sinker on the bottom at all times and the hook at the depth you feel the fish are holding. Shake the tip of the rod to give the worm action.

When a bass takes the worm you normally won’t feel the bite. You will notice your line moves to the side, the weight seems like it fell off or got real heavy. Set the hook!
