Setting the Drag:

(By Matt Keith)

The drag setting will help keep a fish from snapping your line!

Somewhere on your reel is a drag adjustment. It can be on the top bottom or side. On a bait caster it is on the side and generally looks like a star. On a spin caster it is normally on top but can also be on the bottom. It will look like a round button. Turn the knob clockwise to tighten and counter clock wise to loosen. To test the drag pull the line from the tip of the rod with a tug. You will want the line to give a little but not so lose a fish will create slack in the line or pull out too much line that you can’t reel in. It is better to error on the loose side and adjust tighter while playing the fish.
